The 38-year-old right-hander missed all of this season with a recurring nerve issue in his shoulder.
Analisis: Carpenter, 38, was 95-44 for the Cardinals over nine seasons, three of which were mostly lost to injuries as he experienced a recurring nerve-related condition in his pitching arm. He was the National League Cy Young Award winner in 2005, when he went 21-5.

Analisis: The former Cy Young winner pitched a three-inning simulated game on Wednesday. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said Carpenter will start Monday for Double-A Springfield. Matheny said Carpenter will be limited to a pitch count in the ``60s-range'' in his first live action since making three starts during the playoffs last year.

Analisis: After working four simulated innings and totaling 106 pitches counting warm-ups Friday, the 38-year-old Carpenter said it was the best he'd thrown and was something he could build on. The next step likely will be facing hitters.

The 37-year-old pitcher met with reporters at Busch Stadium on Monday as pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Jupiter, Fla. Last week, the team all but ruled him out for this year after problems in his right arm.
Analisis: Carpenter is entering the second year of a two-year, $21 million contract and said he owed it the organization to keep trying. But after undergoing an eighth surgery last season, he said there would not be a ninth. Carpenter knew something was wrong a few weeks ago when his hand turned red and purple and was aching soon after he began throwing from a mound.
Feb. 5 11:57 AM PT12:57 PM MT1:57 PM CT2:57 PM ET14:57 HE19:57 GMT3:57 CST12:57 PM MST2:57 PM EST3:27 PM VEN23:57 UAE1:57 PM CT-Carpenter has been slowed in his attempt to come back from neck and shoulder nerve damage and will skip his next rehab start. The 2005 Cy Young Award winner struggled Saturday in his latest minor league outing, allowing four runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings for the Cardinals' Triple-A farm club in Memphis.
Analisis: He expects to consult with the Cardinals' medical staff over the next few days before planning his next move. Carpenter missed most of last season because of shoulder and neck injuries that resulted in neurogenic thoracic outlet surgery in July 2012.
